If the package looks pretty, people will buy just about anything. So says an advertising executive in New York, and he has proved his point by selling boxes of rubbish for the price of an expensive bottle of wine.

Justin Gignac,26, has sold almost 900    1   presented plastic boxes of rubbish from the street of Big Apple at between $50 and $100 each. Buyers from 19 countries have paid for the souvenirs(紀念品). The idea has been so successful that he is thinking of promoting it around the world.

It all began when Mr. Gignac was at a summer workshop, “We had a discussion about the importance of   2  ,”he recalls.” Someone said packaging was unimportant. I disagreed. The only way to prove it was by selling something nobody would ever want.”

He searches the streets of Manhattan and typical   3   include broken glass, subway tickets, Starbucks cups and used   4   forks. “Special editions” are offered at a high price. He charged $100 for rubbish from the opening day of the New York Yankees’ stadium.

Mr. Gignac denies   5   his customers for fools: “They know what they’re getting. They appreciate the fact that they’re taking something nobody would want and finding beauty in it.”

Some   6   customers include people who used to live in the city and want a down-to-earth souvenir. He claims he has even sold to art collectors.

Realizing that the concept appears to be a real money-maker, Mr. Gignac has   7   a company and is employing his girlfriend as vice president. He   8   to discuss his profit margins: “It’s actually quite a lot of effort putting them together-but yes, garbage is free.”

科目:高中英語 來源:2015屆江蘇省高二上學期開學測試英語試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

I had the meanest mother in the whole world. While other kids ate candy for breakfast, I had to have cereal, eggs or toast. While others had Cokes and candy for lunch, I had to eat a sandwich. As you can guess, my supper was different from the other kids’ too. But at least, I wasn’t alone in my sufferings. My sister and two brothers had the same mean mother as I did.

My mother insisted upon knowing where we were at all times. She had to know who our friends were and where we were going. She insisted if we said we’d be gone an hour, then we should be gone one hour or less -- not one hour and one minute. And she always insisted upon us telling the truth. Now you can see how mean she was.

The worst is yet to come. We had to be in bed by nine each night and up at eight the next morning. We couldn’t sleep till noon like our friends. So while they slept - my mother actually had the courage to break the Child Labor Law. She made us work. We had to wash dishes, make beds, and learn to cook. We had to wear clean clothes and take a bath every day. The other kids always wore their clothes for days. We reached the height of disgrace because she made our clothes herself, just to save money. I believe she laid awake at night thinking up mean things to do to us.

Through the years, things didn’t improve a bit. We could not lie in bed “sick” like our friends did, and miss school. Our marks in school had to live up to expectations. Our friends’ report cards had beautiful colors on them, black for passing, red for failing. My mother, being as different as she was, would be satisfied with nothing less than ugly black marks.

As the years rolled by, first one and then the other of us was put to shame. We graduated from high school. With our mother behind us, talking, hitting and demanding respect, none of us was allowed the pleasure of being a drop-out.

My mother was a complete failure as a mother. Out of four children, a couple of us attained some higher education. None of us have ever been arrested or divorced. Each of my brothers served his time in the service of this country. She forced us to grow up into God-fearing, educated, honest adults. I am now trying to raise my three children. I am filled with pride when my children call me mean. Why? Because now I thank God every day for giving me the meanest mother in the whole world.

1.The author’s mother wanted her children to _________.

A. do their best at school and be educated and respected citizens

B. be top students in school and graduate with honors

B. The author’s mother set timetables for her children whenever they went out.

C. Some of the children weren’t able to go to college because of their mean mother.

D.As a parent, the author is following her mother’s example.

3.It can be inferred from the passage that________.

A. All the other kids at school studied better than the author.

B. The author worked hard and usually got good grades in studies.

C. Mother was punished for breaking the Labor Law.

D. The author’s family lived a miserable life.

科目:高中英語 來源:2015屆江蘇省高二上學期期中考試英語試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

When Mary Moore began her high school in 1951, her mother told her, “Be sure and take a typing course so when this show business thing doesn't work out, you'll have something to rely on.” Mary responded in typical teenage fashion. From that moment on, "the very last thing I ever thought about doing was taking a typing course," she recalls.

The show business thing worked out, of course. In her career, Mary won many awards. Only recently, when she began to write Growing Up Again, did she regret ignoring her mom, “I don't know how to use a computer,” she admits.

Unlike her 1995 autobiography(自傳), After All, her second book is less about life as an award-winning actress and more about living with diabetes (糖尿病). All the money from the book is intended for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), an organization she serves as international chairman. “I felt there was a need for a book like this,” she says. “I didn't want to lecture, but I wanted other diabetics to know that things get better when we're self-controlled and do our part in managing the disease.”

But she hasn't always practiced what she teaches. In her book, she describes that awful day, almost 40 years ago, when she received two pieces of life-changing news. First, she had lost the baby she was carrying, and second, tests showed that she had diabetes. In a childlike act, she left the hospital and treated herself to a box of doughnuts (甜甜圈). Years would pass before she realized she had to grow up ---again---and take control of her diabetes, not let it control her. Only then did she kick her three-pack-a-day cigarette habit, overcome her addiction to alcohol, and begin to follow a balanced diet.

Although her disease has affected her eyesight and forced her to the sidelines of the dance floor, she refuses to fall into self-pity. “Everybody on earth can ask, 'why me?' about something or other,” she insists. “It doesn't do any good. No one is immune (免疫的) to heartache, pain, and disappointments. Sometimes we can make things better by helping others. I've come to realize the importance of that as I've grown up this second time. I want to speak out and be as helpful as I can be.”

1.Why did Mary feel regretful?

A. She didn't achieve her ambition.

B. She didn't take care of her mother.

C. She didn't complete her high school.

D. She didn't follow her mother's advice.

2.We can know that before 1995, Mary __________.

A. had two books published

B. received many career awards

C. knew how to use a computer

D. supported the JDRF by writing

3.Mary's second book Growing Up Again is mainly about her__________ .

A. living with diabetes                    B. successful show business

C. service for an organization                     D. remembrance of her mother

4.When Mary received the life-changing news, she_____________ .

A. lost control of herself                                     B. began a balanced diet

C. tried to get a treatment                                  D. behaved in an adult way

5.What can we know from the last paragraph?

A. Mary feels pity for herself.

B. Mary has recovered from her disease.

C. Mary wants to help others as much as possible.

D. Mary determines to go back to the dance floor.

【1】If you are worried about things and are under a lot of stress at work or school, then you are probably not sleeping well. Worry can keep you awake, tossing and turning in bed until the early hours of the morning when you eventually fail asleep. When you wake up, you don't feel refreshed, but tired and worn out and unable to face a new day.

【2】Dr Henry Winkle wrote an article in a recent newspaper, which indicates that          . Dr Winkle says, “The more we worry, the less we sleep, the more we are unable to deal with stress. If we can find a way to get a good night's sleep,” he adds, “we can often find the energy to deal with what's worrying us.”

【3】So, what is a good night's sleep? Research shows that the amount of sleep which people need in order to keep healthy varies a lot. Seven hours in about the average amount, though strangely enough, sleeping longer often gives you a headache instead of making you feel more refreshed.

【4】Dr Winkle believes that preparing for sleeping is important. People who work late should try to give themselves a short break and do something restful before going to bed. This could be watching TV or listening to music. Doing some exercise earlier in the day should help you to feel physically as well as mentally tired. A bedtime drink can also help, but coffee or tea should be avoided as they contain caffeine and will keep you awake. “When you put the light out,” Dr Winkle says, “ concentrate on relaxing your muscles, working slowly up from your feet, and you'll be asleep before you know it.”
